Ukraine — the beginning
The Children of War cycle began immediately after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. I began painting the Ukraine series the day after the invasion. The works were made at night, in the basement, in a state of emotional shock. I did not buy new paints. I used what was left in the studio, painting over old works and working on boards, fibreboard, fragments of furniture and whatever materials were available.

Cykl Children of War rozpoczął się bezpośrednio po rosyjskiej agresji na Ukrainę w lutym 2022 roku. Serię Ukraina zacząłem malować dzień po rozpoczęciu inwazji. Obrazy powstawały nocami, w piwnicy, w stanie silnego emocjonalnego napięcia. Nie kupowałem nowych farb. Wykorzystywałem to, co miałem w pracowni — resztki materiałów, stare obrazy, deski, dyktę, fragmenty mebli.

The limitation became part of the language of the series. The paintings were made quickly, almost as a physical reaction. Figures move towards the invader, improvised weapons appear in their hands, helicopters burn, tanks point their guns towards the sky. Saints enter the battlefield. Blue and yellow become dominant.

Ograniczenie stało się częścią języka tych prac. Obrazy powstawały szybko, niemal jako fizyczna reakcja. Postacie idą przeciwko najeźdźcy, w ich rękach pojawia się prowizoryczna broń, płoną śmigłowce, czołgi kierują lufy ku niebu. Na polu walki pojawiają się również święci. Dominuje błękit i żółć.

It was a diary, but also a symbolic gesture of solidarity with people fighting for their country, their lives and their future. The first presentation of the works took place in the immediate context of our curatorial work at Klub Delta in Szczecin. Soon afterwards, the paintings travelled beyond Poland.

Był to rodzaj dziennika, ale również symboliczny sposób bycia razem z ludźmi walczącymi o swój kraj, życie i przyszłość. Pierwsza prezentacja prac odbyła się w bezpośrednim kontekście naszej działalności kuratorskiej w Klubie Delta w Szczecinie. Wkrótce obrazy zaczęły podróżować poza Polskę.

The exhibition brought together artistic responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine alongside works addressing other wars and forms of violence around the world. For me, this was an important moment. The paintings had begun as an immediate response to one particular war, but they were already starting to speak about something wider.

Belarus
The following works turned towards Belarus. The painting Self-injury of Ales Pushkin during his trial was made in solidarity with the Belarusian artist Ales Pushkin, who was imprisoned by the Lukashenko regime. His act of cutting his abdomen during his trial became a brutal image of resistance against political repression. Ukraine and Belarus gradually ceased to be separate subjects. They became parts of the same field: violence, power, resistance, fear, sacrifice and the human body caught inside history.

Białoruś
Kolejne prace skierowały się w stronę Białorusi. Obraz Samookaleczenie Alesia Puszkina podczas procesu sądowego powstał w geście solidarności z białoruskim artystą Alesiem Puszkinem, uwięzionym przez reżim Łukaszenki. Jego gest rozcięcia brzucha podczas procesu stał się dla mnie brutalnym obrazem oporu wobec politycznej represji. Ukraina i Białoruś stopniowo przestały być osobnymi tematami. Stały się częścią tego samego pola: przemocy, władzy, oporu, strachu, poświęcenia i ludzkiego ciała uwikłanego w historię.

Children of War
This is where the title Children of War comes from. These paintings are not illustrations of particular events. They belong to a longer language of expressionist painting that had already been developing in my work: humanoid figures, primal instincts, aggression, fear, chaos and the fragile boundary between victim and predator. War simply made this language impossible to ignore. The paintings became a confrontation between the primitive human figure and the machinery of contemporary civilisation.

Children of War
Stąd pojawia się nazwa Children of War. Te obrazy nie są ilustracjami konkretnych wydarzeń. Wyrastają z języka ekspresyjnego malarstwa, który rozwijał się w mojej pracy już wcześniej: humanoidalnych postaci, pierwotnych instynktów, agresji, lęku, chaosu oraz kruchej granicy między ofiarą a drapieżnikiem. Wojna sprawiła po prostu, że ten język stał się niemożliwy do zignorowania. Malarstwo stało się konfrontacją prymitywnej ludzkiej figury z machiną współczesnej cywilizacji.

The Children of War cycle therefore grew out of Ukraine, passed through Belarus, and gradually became something broader: a body of paintings about war as a recurring human condition. Selected works were later presented as part of KONIK STUDIO timeline at the National Museum in Szczecin in 2023, where the Ukraine, Belarus and related painting cycles formed part of the wider story of Paweł Kleszczewski's painting practice. The cycle remains open. It is not a chronicle of one war. It is a painting record of what happens when violence enters the imagination — and stays there.

Wystawa prezentowała szeroki przekrój naszej działalności, obejmujący między innymi malarstwo, rysunek, animację, wideo i instalację. Cykl pozostaje otwarty. Nie jest kroniką jednej wojny. Jest malarskim zapisem tego, co dzieje się z wyobraźnią, kiedy przemoc wchodzi do jej wnętrza — i już w niej pozostaje.
