ErrrroOOrrrr

„Krimea 1896” was created between 2016 and 2017 while Konik Studio was operating in Ireland, shifting between the studio on Bridge Street in Cavan and the Bullock Lane Residency at Townhall Cavan. The cycle was born directly in the aftermath of the annexation of Crimea—an event that served as an impulse for reflection on the recurring mechanisms of history.

I was not commenting on current politics at the time.

From the very beginning, I was interested in something far more unsettling: the impression that history does not move in a straight line. It returns. It changes its costumes, languages, and symbols, yet retains the exact same rhythm. Like a glitch in the system that reboots itself.

1896 is not a historical date.

It is an antedating.

A fictional time belonging to a world that never existed, yet whose traces can be found in the present.

„Krimea 1896” is therefore a quantum time machine—an archive of events from a future past.

ErrrroOOrrrr

Krimea 1896 powstała w latach 2016–2017 kiedy Konik Studio działało w Irlandii, pomiędzy pracownią przy Bridge Street w Cavan a rezydencją Bullock Lane Residency w Townhall Cavan.

History collides with geography

Krimea is more of an idea here than a physical place.
Much like Cavan, Ulster, Szczecin, or Gdynia.
These are places where history collides with geography.
Borderlands.
Spaces where borders shift more frequently than people can manage to get used to them. Sites of memory, migration, conflict, and the constant negotiation of identity.
Growing up in Szczecin, a city with a complex history and changing allegiance, and later living for many years in Cavan—on the borderland between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland—I began to see with increasing clarity that a border is not a line on a map. It is a state of mind.
In this sense, Krimea becomes a symbol for any place where empires attempt to subjugate memory.

Historia ściera się z geografią

Krym jest tutaj bardziej ideą niż miejscem.

Podobnie jak Cavan, Ulster, Szczecin czy Gdynia.

To miejsca, gdzie historia ściera się z geografią.

Pogranicza.

Miejsca pamięci, migracji, konfliktów i nieustannego negocjowania tożsamości.

Archive of a Non-Existent Empire

Figures resembling soldiers appear in the paintings.
Or rather, sailor-soldiers.
They belong to no army.
They represent no state.
They are the phantoms of an anonymous Empire.
Their titles—KRIMKKRRR 1896, Krimkeeeror1896, Rimdifkrimke1896, Weufodesse1896, or Dynamoperecopccscc1896—resemble fragments of a language that has collapsed.
These are not words.
They are the remnants of words.
Alinguistic traces of a civilization we can no longer decipher.
The entire cycle functions like the rediscovered archive of a fictional military campaign.
A documentation of something that never happened, yet feels shockingly familiar.

Archiwum nieistniejącego Imperium

Na obrazach pojawiają się postacie przypominające żołnierzy.

A właściwie marynarzo-żołnierzy.

Nie należą do żadnej armii.

Nie reprezentują żadnego państwa.

Są widmami anonimowego Imperium.

Ich nazwy — KRIMKKRRR 1896, Krimkeeeror1896, Rimdifkrimke1896, Weufodesse1896 czy Dynamoperecopccscc1896 — przypominają fragmenty języka, który uległ rozpadowi.

To nie są słowa.

To pozostałości słów.

Decay

Initially, the paintings remain figurative.
Bodies, gestures, tensions, struggles, processions, marches, and anonymous heroes emerge.
However, as the cycle progresses, the depicted world begins to gradually fall apart.
The soldiers lose their faces.
Bodies turn into rhythms.
Cities arise.
Architecture.
Factories.
Brutalist structures.
These, too, do not remain permanent.
Their form begins to disintegrate.
Color takes control over the canvas.
Representation gives way to pure painterly energy.
It is precisely here that the first abstractions are born—the ones that, a few years later, will fully unfold in the Emanations cycle.
Looking back from today’s perspective, „Crimea 1896” does not end with figuration.
It ends with its disintegration.

Rozpad

Początkowo obrazy pozostają figuratywne.

Pojawiają się ciała, gesty, napięcia, siłowanie się, pochody, marsze i anonimowi bohaterowie.

Jednak wraz z rozwojem cyklu świat przedstawiony zaczyna stopniowo się rozpadać.

Żołnierze tracą twarze.

Ciała zamieniają się w rytmy.

Powstają miasta.

Architektura.

Fabryki.

Brutalistyczne konstrukcje.

The Last Conventional Cycle

It was also the last moment in which I worked according to the conventional model of easel painting.
Store-bought canvases.
Stretcher bars.
A closed cycle.
After its completion, something shifted.
The image began to leave the canvas.
I was no longer painting solely on canvases, but also on found materials, old tabletops, fixtures, metal casings, and ceramic tiles salvaged from demolished buildings.
Matter began to co-create meaning.
The first objects, miniatures, and spatial experiments emerged.
This experience later led to the working method developed at Konik Studio—from Kunstkamera, through PROWIZORIUM, all the way to contemporary installations and site-specific actions.

Ostatni konwencjonalny cykl

Echo

„Krimea 1896” was a moment of transition. The cycle began with figures and an imagined history, but gradually led toward the disintegration of form and the discovery of the autonomy of color.
History ceased to be just the subject of the painting—it became the very matter from which a personal myth was created. Figures dissolved into signs, signs shifted into abstraction, and the image began to leave the canvas, moving toward objects and space.
It was during this process that the working method later developed by Konik Studio took shape: treating the image as the beginning of a journey, rather than its end.
History does not disappear. It merely changes its dates, languages, and uniforms.

Echo

Zmienia jedynie daty, języki i mundury.
