2006 — Dialogues and the first crackscks

I graduated in painting and stained glass in Toruń in 2006. My diploma was Dialogues — a cycle that received a grade of 4+. At the time, I felt I had been slapped in the face. Other students received higher grades, distinctions, and there were thoughts of becoming teaching assistants. I was ambitious, proud, stubborn and difficult. I entered into conflicts, changed studios and fought hard for my own path.

Years later, one of my professors told me that these were precisely the students he valued most — those who had their own opinions, rebelled and were not afraid of conflict. Today I understand that this difficult relationship was also part of my education.

Dialogues, however, was not the end. Even then, painting was beginning to move beyond the canvas. After returning to Szczecin, together with Bartłomiej Hajkiewicz and Mariusz Kleszczewski, I founded the Edit Custom Team group. We created performative actions based on motifs from Dialogues. I was interested in expanded painting — an image that could enter space, action and situation.

2006 — Dialogi i pierwsze pęknięcia

Studia malarskie i witrażowe w Toruniu ukończyłem w 2006 roku. Dyplomem były Dialogi — cykl, który otrzymał ocenę 4+. Wtedy czułem, że dostałem po dupie. Koledzy dostawali wyższe oceny, wyróżnienia, pojawiały się myśli o asystenturze. Ja byłem ambitny, dumny, krnąbrny i trudny. Wchodziłem w konflikty, zmieniałem pracownie i mocno walczyłem o własną drogę.

Szczecin — a child in the fog

After graduating, I returned to Szczecin with Dialogues, a great deal of ambition and very little idea of what should come next.

There was no Academy of Art yet, no TRAFO, and after six years in Toruń I had no artistic community of my own here. I did not know how to enter the professional art world. I did not know how to look for exhibitions, residencies, galleries or curators. I believed, to some extent, in the romantic model of the artist who is simply discovered one day.

Looking back today, I was a little like a child in the fog.

But I had one thing: I knew how to work.

I inherited this way of acting partly from my grandmother Eleonora from the Tuchola Forests, who has always been an exceptionally hardworking woman. When she set her mind to something, she simply found a way to make it happen. I adopted this way of acting, although at the time I did not yet understand that determination alone is not always enough.

And then Joanna Łozowska appeared.

She passed on information about a residency competition called TRANSFER POLEN 2.

Szczecin — dziecko we mgle

Joanna Łozowska — the door to Freising

The project was an artistic exchange between Szczecin and Munich. A group of artists from Szczecin travelled to Germany, while artists from Munich came to Szczecin. I was accepted into the programme.

It was not part of any carefully planned career strategy. I simply applied and — somehow — got in.

After graduating, for the first time someone not only saw my work, but decided that it was worth giving me time, a studio and the conditions to continue working.

I was going to Germany.

At that point, I did not really know what that meant.

Joanna Łozowska — drzwi do Freising

Jechałem do Niemiec.

Freising — the first breath

The residency at Schafhof — Europäisches Künstlerhaus Oberbayern in Freising, within TRANSFER POLEN 2, became one of the first moments when I truly began to believe in myself as an artist.

I had a studio, materials, time and money to live on. For someone brought up in Poland during the transformation period, fresh from an art academy in Toruń, it felt almost unreal.

Munich was another world. Galleries, museums, the Pinakothek, artists, cultural institutions, people from the diplomatic and cultural world — I was seeing a professional art world that had previously existed for me mainly in my imagination.

I was young and emotionally immature. I found separation from my family and Kasia difficult. The experience itself was also overwhelming.

But I worked.

For the first time after graduating, I had the conditions to find out what might happen if I simply followed the work instead of constantly wondering whether I was doing the right thing.

Freising — pierwszy oddech

Byłem młody i niedojrzały. Trudno znosiłem rozłąkę z rodziną i Kasią.

Story of Fern Flower — a laboratory

In Freising I produced dozens of drawings and a cycle of fourteen oil paintings. One of the most important projects was the polyptych Story of Fern Flower.

I became interested in the Polish folk legend of the fern flower — a mysterious flower that blooms rarely and is said to bring wealth to whoever finds it, but whose discovery often carries a warning: perhaps something precious must be sacrificed in exchange for something extraordinary.

Today, the structure of this story seems almost painfully obvious to me. The desire for success, the fear of losing what is close to us, the belief that an extraordinary achievement must have its price.

Story of Fern Flower — laboratorium

We Freising powstały dziesiątki rysunków i cykl czternastu obrazów olejnych. Jednym z najważniejszych projektów był poliptyk Story of Fern FlowerHistoria kwiatu paproci.

At the time, I simply followed the myth.

The works developed motifs already present in Dialogues: profiles, figures, faces and the body, but also apples, arrows, ferns, animals, crosses, still lifes and an increasingly complex system of personal symbols.

The paintings became more colourful, direct and physical. The drawings became even more important. They began to contain an entire world.

Looking back today, I see Story of Fern Flower as a kind of laboratory. The language that developed there would later appear in Desiries, Broken Tale, Krimea 1896, Emanations and many subsequent projects.

At the time, I did not know this.

Patrząc z dzisiejszej perspektywy, widzę w Story of Fern Flower rodzaj laboratorium.

After returning — more and more paths

After returning to Poland, I continued Story of Fern Flower. I made paintings of wolves, dogs, flowers, soldiers behind bars, landscapes, faces, women, strange still lifes and increasingly wild compositions.

The freedom of colour and form that had emerged in Freising continued to develop. The image became more symbolic, mythological and instinctive.

At the same time, I increasingly moved beyond painting. Scenography, video, projection, performative actions and experiments with digital imagery began to appear. Some of these experiences would later lead towards animation.

At the time, however, they were not part of any strategy.

I was simply trying different things.

One path opened another.

Lisbon — losing my naivety

In 2010, Lisbon appeared.

I received an invitation to show my work at Colorida Galeria de Arte. At the time, I believed that I had been noticed abroad. Only later did I understand that it was a commercial offer sent to many young artists.

It was painful.

My parents helped me finance the trip, and for a long time I carried a sense of guilt about that money. I wanted so badly to prove that I could become an artist that I was not yet able to distinguish a real opportunity from an offer that was selling me the possibility of one.

Lizbona — utrata naiwności

W 2010 roku pojawiła się Lizbona.

Otrzymałem zaproszenie do pokazania prac w Colorida Galeria de Arte.

Lisbon itself, however, was a wonderful experience. I went there with Kasia, we saw Lisbon and Lisbon and heard about Sintra, and for the first time we travelled together in that way. I saw another world.

But something shifted inside me artistically.

Freising had given me the belief that doors were open. Lisbon showed me that not every door leads where it appears to.

It took away some of my naivety.

And I think that was when I began to move away from the idea that I absolutely had to become a conventional gallery painter. I did not abandon painting, but I stopped believing that it was the only way I could build my path.

I began opening other possibilities: scenography, curating, alternative activities, video, space, moving image.

It was not yet a conscious decision.

It was rather an attempt to find my place after my first idea of a painter’s career had begun to fall apart.

Sama Lizbona była jednak wspaniałym doświadczeniem. Pojechałem tam z Kasią, zobaczyliśmy Lizbonę i usłuszeliśmy o Sintrzę, pierwszy raz wspólnie podróżowaliśmy w ten sposób.

Pamięć kształtu — a change of perspective

Around this time, Kasia and I prepared Pamięć kształtu at the Museum of Technology and Communication — Art Depot in Szczecin. It was an important early attempt for us to think about an exhibition as something more than a collection of paintings.

We began to look at space, relationships between works, the way a viewer moves through an exhibition and the construction of the exhibition itself.

Painting was still present, but I became increasingly interested in what could be built around it.

Today I see this as one of the beginnings of a way of working that many years later would become part of Konik Studio.

Another important point was the exhibition Ciśnienie krwi at the Inkubator Kultury in Szczecin, and my meeting with Andreas Menhard.

Andreas became a friend, curator and mentor. He was connected to the independent, off-mainstream cultural scene and showed me another possibility: you do not have to wait for someone to open a door for you. You can begin building your own space.

He also taught me to look at an exhibition as a space and a situation, rather than simply a presentation of paintings.

It was an important moment.

After Lisbon, it was increasingly less about being “discovered” as a painter. It was more and more about making things.

At the same time, scenography, video, projections and other activities appeared. I began moving between media, even though I could not yet name what I was actually doing.

Many years later, the roles with Andreas were reversed. In 2025, I invited him to participate in PROWIZORIUM at the National Museum in Szczecin — as co-curator and artist.

It was a reversal of roles, but for me it carried the weight of a whole circle coming back together.

A similar story came about through an extraordinary twist of fate: many years later, my path crossed again with Joanna Łozowska — this time at the National Museum in Szczecin, when director Lech Karwowski entrusted her with curating our Konik Studio Timeline exhibition.

Coraz bardziej chodziło o to, żeby robić.

W 2025 roku zaprosiłem go do udziału w PROWIZORIUM w Muzeum Narodowym w Szczecinie — jako współkuratora i artystę.

2010–2011 — further away from a single profession

After Lisbon, for some time I looked at painting with greater distance. Not because I had stopped loving it.

Rather because I began to fear that it was impossible to make a living from it.

So I went deeper into other areas. Scenography, performative actions, video, projections, curating and working with Kasia began to create a much larger space.

In 2011, further experiences in theatre and scenography appeared, while at the same time I became increasingly interested in the moving image.

I did not yet know that one of those paths would lead towards animation.

Nor did I know that what I experienced as moving away from painting would later become one of the foundations of Konik Studio.

Scenografia, działania performatywne, wideo, projekcje, kuratorstwo i współpraca z Kasią zaczęły tworzyć coraz większą przestrzeń.

Years of shifting

The years 2009–2011 were not a straight line.

Today it is easy to arrange them into a sequence: Freising, Story of Fern Flower, Lisbon, Pamięć kształtu, Ciśnienie krwi, scenography, video, animation, Ireland.

At the time, I did not see it that way.

There were successes, but also disappointments, naivety, guilt and periods when I genuinely did not know what to do next.

Above all, however, the way I looked at myself was changing.

Freising gave me belief.

Lisbon took away some of my naivety.

And then, instead of returning to the starting point, I began opening more paths.

Today I can see that Story of Fern Flower led towards Desiries. Desiries opened further paths. Experiments with space, image, action and movement gradually became part of the territory from which Konik Studio would later emerge.

Lata przesunięcia

Lata 2009–2011 nie były prostą linią.

Dzisiaj łatwo ułożyć je w ciąg: Freising, Story of Fern Flower, Lizbona, Pamięć kształtu, Ciśnienie krwi, scenografia, wideo, animacja, Irlandia.

A potem, zamiast wrócić do punktu wyjścia, zacząłem otwierać kolejne drogi.

Dzisiaj widzę, że Story of Fern Flower prowadziło do Desiries. Desiries otwierało kolejne ścieżki. Eksperymenty z przestrzenią, obrazem, działaniem i ruchem stopniowo stawały się częścią obszaru, z którego później wyłoniło się Konik Studio.

At the time, I could not see this continuity.

I saw rather a series of attempts.

And sometimes my own failures.

That is why I looked at that young version of myself through a distorted mirror for so many years.

Today I see something else.

Not a person who failed to become what he wanted to be.

But a person who, without yet knowing where he was going, began to expand his world.

And perhaps this is the most important thing I inherited from my grandmother Eleonora from the Tuchola Forests: not a method or a career plan, but the instinct to keep going, even when you do not yet know where the road leads.

There was a lot of ambition then. A lot of shame. A lot of anxiety. A need to prove to myself that I could do it.

But there was also work.

And there was wind.

Freising was one of the first places where I began to recognise it.

Wtedy nie widziałem tej ciągłości.

Widziałem raczej kolejne próby.

I czasami własne porażki.

2011 — Leaving

In 2011, after Ciśnienie krwi and further experiences in Poland, Kasia and I decided to leave for Ireland.

It was not yet a conscious beginning of Konik Studio. It was more an escape to a place where we believed we could start again.

Today I can see that all those earlier experiences — Dialogues, Edit Custom Team, Freising, Story of Fern Flower, Lisbon, Pamięć kształtu, Ciśnienie krwi, scenography and video — were not leading towards one single destination.

They were creating a language.

And then that language travelled with us to Ireland.

There, the next part of the story began.

2011 — Wyjazd

A potem ten język pojechał z nami do Irlandii.

Tam zaczęła się następna część historii.
